about

Azul Infinito, which features Ryan Keberle’s signature band, Catharsis, includes the vocals of Chilean singer Camila Meza, alongside a frontline of Keberle and GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, Peruvian-born bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Eric Doob, creates a continuity of sound and aesthetic that could only have resulted from constant playing (often monthly around New York) for the past four years. From this continuity, they breathe as one and express a band aesthetic.

For Keberle, American music’s emotional power, which stems from the blues, is reflected in similarly cathartic afrocentric musical elements found in South American music. Fittingly, Jorge Luis Borges, the noted Argentine writer, called the cathartic act of experiencing art an “evento estético” or “aesthetic event.” As on past records, Keberle’s goal is to allow the listener to feel something through his thoughtful compositions and songs. “I hope this record conveys the influence that South American music has played in my life, and allows listeners to experience their own aesthetic event,” says Keberle. “Each original song on this record is either dedicated to, or directly influenced by, a specific South American composer with whom I’ve had the pleasure to play.”

Track Name: I Thought I Knew (for Pedro Giraudo)
Lyrics by Manca Miro:

I walked along these concrete shores before
and looked into the midnight sky
and though I always knew there must be more
its depth had never drawn my eye.

Tonight it pulls me
as though it wants to sweep me
to outer space
from where I won’t return.

My mind draws open
to swallow the stars
and all their light.

Now I can feel
how small I had been
with my supernova heart.

I thought I knew who I had been before.
I thought I knew where I had stood.
Yet now I have discovered something more
that in me there is so much room.

That thoughts - untethered - falling through
space like feathers
could fill me up and fly me home again.
Track Name: Canción Mandala
Lyrics by Sebastian Cruz:

¿En donde estoy?
i, e, o, e
Sigue el sonido de mi voz
Si no me vez
i, e, o, e
Sigue escuchándome

Del viento viene la brisa
De la brisa vendaval
De vendaval huracán vuelve a soplar
De viento toda palabra
De viento toda canción
De viento también toda declaración
Y cada canción es como un mandala
Deja una estela sorda detrás
Y no se ve más
Y el viento pasa borrando el camino
Nuevo de arena para jamás
Voltear a mirar
Vuela, vuela, vuela y no se reposa
Vuela, vuela, vuela sin parar

Este mundo es de sonido
De ruido sin razón
Descubre este murmullo entre los dos
Llora una sirena, suena una alarma
Canta un tambor y uno que nació
Estrena su voz
Vuela, vuela, vuela y no se reposa
Vuela, vuela, vuela sin parar (x2)

¿En donde estoy?
i, e, o, e
Sigue el sonido de mi voz
Si no me vez
i, e, o, e
Sigue escuchándome

Vuela, vuela, vuela y no se reposa
Vuela, vuela, vuela sin parar

Busca mi voz
Entre el sonido
Entre los ruidos
Búscame entre los ruidos
Búscame entre los ruidos
Encuéntrame entre los ruidos
Encuéntrame entre los ruidos

English translation to “Canción Mandala”

Where am I?
i-e-o-e
Follow the sound of my voice…
If you can’t see me…
i-e-o-e

Keep on listening to me.
From the wind comes the breeze,
from the breeze the gale,
from the gale the hurricane that blows again.
Of wind every word,
Of wind every song,
Of wind what I claim.

And each song as a mandala
leaving a silent trail behind
soon lost for your eyes.

And the wind just blows carelessly
erasing the new road
you wrote in the sand
to never look back.

Fly, fly, fly … to never rest,
Fly, fly, fly … to never stop
this world made of sound
of meaningless noise.

Find this whisper between us.
The mermaid cries, an alarm rings,
a drum that sings
and the newborn that tries
his voice for the first time.

Fly, fly, fly … to never rest,
Fly, fly, fly … to never stop.

Where am I?
i-e-o-e
Follow the sound of my voice…
If you can’t see me…
i-e-o-e
Keep on listening to me.

Fly, fly, fly … to never rest,
Fly, fly, fly … to never stop.

Look for my voice,
into the sound, into the noise.

Look for me into the noise,
look for me into the noise,
find me into the noise,
find me into the noise.
Track Name: She Sleeps Alone (for Sebastian Cruz)
Lyrics by Manca Miro:

She sleeps, alone.
Her breath is drawn
like waves that roll over sand,
somewhere she can’t go.

And you wish
you were not far away,
somewhere she can’t know
you would want her to know.

And if you could,
you’d say,
you’d give your all,
and say it each day.

If only so,
at last, she’d know.

She wakes, alone,
with the falling snow,
and wonders who
her day is waiting for.

Under the snow,
out of sight, there
is life
soon to bloom.

Under her breath,
on the edge
of her mind
there is more.

Over the hill,
when she walks
out of here
there is room.
